Abstract

1.Abstract

This document discloses a method of modifying modulation pattern of inverter semiconductor switches in such a way that communication between inverters can be achieved via power line. One inverter modifies its modulation from normal PWM, and this modification is recognized in another inverter by measuring the signal in the powerline. By beforehand determining what does certain distortion stands for, communication between inverters can be achieved.


2.Background

Distributed generator systems, e.g. photovoltaic power plants, often communicate with higher level controller or monitoring system, or sometimes the inverters connected to the same network communicate with each other. The state of the art communication method can be a field bus, GSM, WLAN or other additional wire/wireless solutions. The solar power plants are getting bigger and the cost of inverters and PV panels (€/W) are decreasing and thus the extra components needed for the communication are playing more significant part in the total system costs. Moreover there will be a need in the future to add more and more IoT components and sensors.

It is also commonly known that the communication between inverters or between inverter and a controller can be done through power lines. Usually separate communication units are being utilized, which send and receive the signals through the power lines.


3.New solution

The basic idea of the new solution is that a power converter semiconductor switch modulation is modified by embedding a communication signal to the normal modulation scheme, e.g. PWM, and the modified signal pattern is detected and processed (decoded) in the receiving end, thus enabling communication between the units.

According to the new solution, depending on the inverter's filter size, various communication techniques could be used. Figures 1-3 present different modulation patterns which could be used for one way communication. According to the techniques presented in Figures 1-3, the communication is based on different lengths of inverter power semiconductor switching times. The switching times must be adjusted in such way that they are not affecting to the inverter's performance, e.g. harmonic distortion of the network current or voltage.
