Abstract

An efficient lighting system consisting of an LED lamp with the ability to integrate to an outdoor lighting controller (OLC) is disclosed. The OLC connected to the LED lamp gathers and monitors the information including on or off state, power usage, and location. The OLC may control the LED lamp in a number of ways including switching the on or off state and dimming the light output. The OLC could be mounted in a position that maintains wireless networking, photoelectric dimming capability, inside or outside the light fixture. It also requires minimal lamp redesign to accommodate a dimming receptacle or lighting controller, and minimal or no fixture modification, and thus suitable for retrofitting to existing lighting installations.

LED LAMP WITH OUTDOOR LIGHTING CONTROLLER

BACKGROUND

The present invention relates in general to a lighting system and, in particular, to an outdoor lighting controller (OLC) that is internally integrated into an LED lamp. By internally mounting a controller, the assembly could maintain the ANSI profile for a particular bulb shape. However, the lamp is installed in a fixture that impedes the transmission of a wireless signal, and a photoelectric dimming control is unusable. Outdoor lighting fixtures such as roadway and area lights typically include ANSI-compliant dimming control receptacles that provide an electrical interconnection between a photo control and a luminaire. Advanced photoelectric controls are incorporated with additional features that wirelessly control and monitor outdoor lighting fixtures. There is a need for a lighting fixture that could be refurbished to include a dimming receptacle or be replaced with a fixture that includes a dimming receptacle.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DRAWINGS

The invention discloses a lighting controller for an LED lamp with the ability to integrate an outdoor lighting controller, wherein:

FIG.1 illustrates connectivity of an LED lamp with a lamp-mounted outdoor lighting controller.

FIG. 2 illustrates an OLC affixed to the top of lamp housing.

FIG. 3 illustrates a fixture-mounted OLC.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

The invention proposes an efficient lighting system, which consists of an LED lamp with the ability to integrate an outdoor lighting controller. The LED lamp is controlled and monitored with an outdoor lighting controller (OLC) when the LED lamp is installed in a fixture that does not include a dimming receptacle. The LED lamp could be installed in a fixture that does not include a dimming receptacle, i.e. typical decorative post-top fixtures. It is incorporated with the features offered by a light fixture with an OLC, i.e. typical roadway fixtures. The light fixture does not require modification because the OLC interfaces with the LED lamp rather than the light fixture itself. When an OLC is connected to the LED lamp, information about the LED lamp could be monitored including on or off state, power usage, and location. Additionally, the OLC may control the LED lamp in a number of ways including switching the on or off state and dimming the light output.

As shown in FIG. 1, power is routed from the LED lamp base to an electrical interconnection between the base and the driver. The interconnection routes power to...
