Abstract

Surgical Device companies that produce and sell trocars, obturators, and combinations of the two generally require some way to protecting the tips of such devices during packaging/shipping. However, due to the disposable nature of this packaging, it is generally desired to minimize the cost and diversity of such packaging. The idea presented herein followed these four basic design constraints: 1. Should have the same insertion and removal forces as the current tip protector designs 2. Must fit in the current exterior packaging 3. Material must be capable of both Gamma and ETO sterilization 4. If possible one solution for all sizes will be preferred but it is not a constraint

However, due to the disposable nature of this packaging, it is generally desired to minimize the cost and diversity of such packaging. The idea presented herein followed these four basic design constraints:

4. If possible one solution for all sizes will be preferred but it is not a constraint

DESCRIPTION

This idea will take advantage of economies of scale and use polycarbonate (or another equally economical hard moldable plastic) as the part material. This tip protector will be able to accept any size trocar (5, 8, 11, 12, & 15mm) by virtue of its stepped design. Each "step" will have at least 3 detent features to provide a press-fit which will hold the end of the trocar in place. This press-fit will be designed to allow easy removal of the trocar/obturator, while still allowing adequate force to contain the two devices during packaging/shipping. Different product lines will be designated by different colors of the raw material or by pad-printing/laser engraving the product code on the tip protector.
