Solar Power Tower Residual Energy Collector

Solar power towers are becoming mainstream energy sources with installations all over the world. However, these systems can be more efficient. Most systems do not capture all the possible light energy.

The novel contribution is a design for a system of secondary reflectors to capture wasted light energy in solar power towers. The structure adds a secondary mirror to reflect wasted light that reflects off the boiler, back to the boiler. Even with low-albedo boiler surfaces, a small percentage power loss occurs; these are significant at high power levels (e.g., ivanpah-class generators).

The structure is comprised of the following:

• Solar power tower boiler design that incorporates secondary reflector(s) that direct waste light back to heat boiler • Secondary reflector(s) as mirrored surfaces • Secondary reflector(s) as curved surfaces • Secondary reflector(s) that surround all or part of boiler
• Secondary reflector(s) that contain articulated sections
