Abstract

Description of Invention

Integration of an automatic tape splicing-unit, for spool-wound tapes, into an engineered spooled-tape un-winder, for Hygiene Disposable machines, e.g. diaper machines. The technology of this automatic splicing-unit is based on a switchable splicing table principle, rather than on the more conventional turret-technology, typical for the actual automatic splicing-units in place in diaper lines that process disk-wound or pancake tape rolls. This turret technology, however, is very complex to apply for spooled tapes.

Nature of the Problem

The Hygiene Disposable Industry in general is continuously looking for efficiency gains and cost improvements, hence a trend for a switch from pancake or disc rolls of closure tapes into spooled tapes format, which minimizes the frequency and number of tape-splices to be made. Inherent to the unwinding of these spooled tapes in f.e. diaper lines is the cross-directional tape-web displacement, which got to be neutralized, in order to assure stable tape processing further on in the diaper-line.  A low cost spool unwinder was designed to cope and reckon with this tape-web displacement challenge in a smart, efficient and compact way. The next level of challenge now is to accommodate this Spool Unwinder further, with a concept for automatic splicing. Automatic splicing units in use nowadays for disc-wound tapes are based on a turret principle, which then because of the spherical hindering with spools (due to the cross-directional tape-displacement while unwinding, as described above) becomes rather complex. The concerned Invention provides an alternative and effective way of integrating automatic splicing with the compact Spool Unwinder concept. We believe particularly the combination of both ideas and concepts (compact Spool Unwinder for Tapes, and integration of Automatic Tape Splicing) is new to the Industry.

Utilization of Invention

 The Spooled Tape Unwinder with Integrated Splicing will enable also Customers who do have automatic splicing capability for actual pancake rolls of tape, to switch for Spooled Tapes, while maintaining the automatic splicing capability.  Yet customers who don't have automatic splicing capability with actual pancake tape rolls can be offered this capability, together with the offer of Spooled Tapes (Technology boost).  Where Spooled Tapes already provide benefits for our customers, providing spooled tape lengths varying x3 to x7 of the pancake roll-length, hence minimizing the need for tape roll-handling and frequency of splicing, and consequently minimizing the quantity of reject products, resulting from each splice to be made, the Invention will even double up these benefits, with the integration of the automatic splicing concept.  The Invention is a valuable and relatively low cost add-on to our Technical Service.
