Abstract

Carbopol® Aqua SF-1 OS polymer (INCI: Acrylates Copolymer) is a new alkali-swellable emulsion polymer grade targeting skin care, sun care, and color cosmetic applications containing pigments and electrolytes. This rheology modifier offers excellent emulsion stability, high pigment compatibility and good electrolyte tolerance in challenging formulations. In Lubrizol's recent film formation study, the results suggest that Carbopol® Aqua SF-1 OS polymer also provides film formation and tightening effects.

Introduction

Carbopol® Aqua SF-1 OS polymer (INCI: Acrylates Copolymer) is a new alkali-swellable emulsion polymer grade targeting skin care, sun care, and color cosmetic applications containing pigments and electrolytes. This rheology modifier offers excellent emulsion stability, high pigment compatibility and good electrolyte tolerance in challenging formulations. In Lubrizol's recent film formation study, the results suggest that Carbopol® Aqua SF-1 OS polymer also provides film formation and tightening effects.

Objective

To fulfill the consumer demand for the "instant tightening effect" in the anti-aging market, there is an increasing number of leave-on skin care applications that are developed to temporarily minimize the appearance of wrinkles with a perceivable tightening sensory. The cosmetic grades of synthetic layered silicates such as sodium silicate, sodium magnesium silicate, lithium magnesium sodium silicate, and sodium magnesium fluorosilicate, are often used in the formulation to achieve consumer desired immediate skin tightening benefits. Many products that contain these synthetic layered silicates in the marketplace are formulated above the synthetic layered silicate's pKa level (pH >10), which may cause redness, itching, and irritation to the skin. As an electrolytic additive, formulation challenges with synthetic layered silicates may include product instability and viscosity control at neutral pH. The objective is to create a stable formulation at the neutral pH range with synthetic layered silicates to achieve the "instant tightening effect".

Formulation and Measurement

Carbopol® Aqua SF-1 OS polymer was chosen for this application due to its abilities to thicken, suspend, and stabilize emulsions with high pigment compatibility and good electrolyte tolerance upon neutralization or "back-acid" thickening. A sample formulation with 4% sodium magnesium silicate and 2% (active polymer) Carbopol® Aqua SF-1 OS polymer was created.

To improve texture and sensorial signals, the original formulation was modified with AvalureTM Flex-6 Polymer (INCI: Polyurethane-62 (and) Trideceth-6). It was used for its flexible film formation, which provides a pleasant soft powdery feel and reduces cracking upon drying for better comfort in-use.
