A Method of Providing Context Aware Voicemail Messages for a Smart Phone

Currently, when a user ignores an incoming call to a smart phone there is no method for indicating to the caller (e.g., via voicemail or otherwise) the reason for the lack of response.

The novel contribution is a system that identifies the user's current context (e.g., application (app) in use on the smart phone) and then enables a user's voicemail message to adapt to indicate to the caller why the user is not answering the call. The novel aspect of the system is that it detects the app that the user is using, in order to change the voicemail. The voicemail application is aware of the smart phone app environment.

At a high level, the steps for implementation are:

1. Identify contact

2. Identify app in use

3. Change voicemail based on app in use

4. Play voicemail message

5. Caller knows why the user is not answering the call

If the user is not using an app or is not near the phone, and ignores the call, then a standard voice message plays.

Examples:

• Using a news app: Hello, Caller. I am currently reading the news and am unable to answer your call.

• Using a fitness app while running: Hello, Caller. I am currently running two miles and am unable to answer your call.

• Using a music app: Hello, Caller. I am currently listening to new music and am unable to answer your call.
