Abstract

An oil-free lubrication system for manufacturing stainless steel strip for carcass of undersea oil and gas applications is disclosed. Oil-free liquid lubricant may be applied to the stainless steel strip prior to, or during forming in the production of carcass. The lubricant is held in a liquid tight container, and the strip is made to pass through the container so that the lubricant is applied. Uniformity of the lubricant coating is achieved by using industrial felt as a seal as the strip enters and exits the container. Advantage of the lubrication system for manufacturing stainless steel strip for carcass is efficient and uniform coating of lubricant onto stainless steel strip with varying surface finishes is achieved.

BACKGROUND

The invention relates to an oil-free lubrication system for manufacturing stainless steel strip for carcass of undersea flexible risers. In the existing system, stainless steel is lubricated by powder wax, or against the flooding of oil such as soluble or cutting oil based lubricant. During the manufacturing process, the machine may rotate up to 50 rpm and throw the lubricant out of the machine. Therefore, this leads to environmental, health and safety issues in the vicinity of the machine. Solid lubricants such as powdered wax applied to the flat strip prior to the formation of carcass tend to fall off the strip to a large extent, or build up in areas on the rolls or strip and can then result in surface pattination or indents in the surface of the formed carcass.

Application of these lubricants to get into or out of a complex geometry of the carcass strip is very difficult. Also there exists the problem of excessive application or with a flooding system of the liquid lubricant to the carcass strip by oil getting trapped in the interstices of the carcass, which may cause damaging effects on the polymer applied during the subsequent extrusion process.

Therefore, there is a need for a lubrication system for manufacturing stainless steel strip for carcass in an efficient manner, for uniform coating of lubricant onto stainless steel strip with varying surface finishes.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

An oil-free lubrication system for manufacturing stainless steel for carcass of undersea flexible risers is disclosed. Oil-free liquid lubricant may be applied to the stainless steel strip prior to, or during forming in the production of carcass. The lubricant is held in a liquid tight container, and the strip is made to pass through the container so that the lubricant is applied. Uniformity of the lubricant coating is achieved by using industrial felt as a seal as the strip enters and exits the container. In some instances, the lubricant may also be applied by using a roller, drip feed system or flooding of the strip and tooling.

The oil-free liquid lubricant is highly reliable, uniform and retained on the strip more effectively as the strip goes into and through forming rolls.
