Abstract

During laparoscopic surgery, trocar devices are used to provide a port into a patient's body in which instrumentation is inserted to perform the procedure. Many of the trocar devices on the market today are disposable and are delivered in cost-effective packaging to maintain sterility of the product until use. Depending on the configuration of the trocar device and the packaging, sterility of the product can be breached due to the device puncturing the packaging during shipping and/or handling. Cost-effective solutions are required to protect the sterility of these devices.

DESCRIPTION

A compressible material trocar packaging protector is proposed to surround the distal portions of the obturator and cannula sub-assemblies of a trocar to minimize the possibility of these features penetrating the packaging and compromising the sterility of the product. An alternative embodiment of the compressible material trocar packaging protector may be designed to surround the distal portion of an assembled obturator and cannula.

One or more longitudinal slots are positioned in block of compressible material; foam, elastomer, etc. to compressibly received the distal portions of trocar sub-assemblies or the entire trocar device. These longitudinal slots are configured to surround the distal end of the trocar or sub-assemblies at their distal tip and circumferential surfaces, protecting the packaging from puncture. The long...
