    This disclosure pertains generally, but not by way of limitation, to fibers formed from amorphous polyimide and polyetherimide resin, including EXTEM™ resin.

BACKGROUND

    Manufactured articles including fibers have varying performance requirements depending on the application in which they will be used. In some cases, it will be desirable for these articles to have high thermal resistance or good flame, smoke and toxicity properties. While many fibers in use today offer these properties, they may not offer an optimum balance of high thermal resistance and good flame, smoke, and toxicity properties.

These and other shortcomings are addressed by the present disclosure.

OVERVIEW

    The present disclosure describes fibers formed from amorphous polyimide and polyetherimide resin, including EXTEM™ resin. The fibers have high thermal resistance and good flame, smoke and toxicity properties. Any size or types of fibers may be formed, including

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

    The EXTEM™ portfolio of resins by SABIC are amorphous thermoplastic polyimide (TPI) and polyetherimide (PEI) resins that offer high thermal resistance (up to 311 °C Tg), high stiffness, creep performance up to 230 °C, and a wide range of chemical resistance (including

chlorinated solvents). In addition, EXTEM™ resins are inherently flame-retardant without the use of halogenated additives that pose an environmental risk, and thus have good Flame, Smoke

and Toxicity ("FST") properties. As a result, EXTEM™ resin can be formed into fibers and used in any application in which fibers having such properties may be desirable.
