Abstract

When one starts a private chat have the private chat embedded in the pane of the group chat and highlight the private chat participants. The private chat can be held with another person who attends the group chat or it can be with a third party (e.g. an advisor) who doesn't participate in the bigger group chat. Going over the respective chat transcript can give much better understanding of what actually transpired at the time the chat was conducted.

The FlowDoc https://www.flowdock.com/features is a very powerful/state-of-the-art collaboration tool built around the basic chat application. It tries to mimic real-life environment and conditions. It caters to the possibility of people carrying on a private conversations with a peer while they [maybe] both are engaged in a group chat or other activity. However, the side-chat is not kept in the context of the group chat. In real life people do exchange whispers and ideas privately while attending a meeting but, they don't leave the room to do that. Another scenario is when a participant in a meeting shoots a note to her advisor to gather/verify some info. All these activities should be retained in their context so that when the meeting's minutes are reviewed the full picture is well understood.

When a chat history and, especially a group-chat, is retrieved every effort should be made to allow for the recreation of the cognitive milieu at the time the chat took place. Having all relevant data in the correct context can help one rehash what had transpired at the time the live chat took place and surely can help in the chat analysis and understanding of the dynamics then and there.

Keeping side-private-chats in a separate stream/file diminishes the value of the respective group chat transcript/recording. One might miss the fact that a crucial contribution to the group chat was in fact a result of a side-private-chat.
