Clothing Modification Apparatus and Service for Traffic Control

A system is needed to help prevent accidents and injury between motor vehicles and pedestrians (and pets). Speed limits and traffic signals are not always sufficient methods to ensure safety.

The novel approach is to combine clothing and wearable technology to develop a clothing modification apparatus service for traffic control. While wearable technology is mostly used for fitness and healthcare, potential exists for using smart clothing (i.e. intelligent textiles, e-textiles, etc.) with micro controllers, smart fabric sensors, etc. for traffic control. This can be used to allow drivers to better see pedestrians at intersections, allow emergency vehicles to use vibrations to alert people in the area, and more. The clothing can warn the pedestrians by vibration (tactile alert) or change in color (visual alert).

Most prior art in this area focuses on how to use smart sensors in the road and in the vehicle or use radar, lasers, or a camera in the car to detect an imminent crash [5]. Pedestrians are viewed as passive obstacles to be avoided. This discussion recognizes that people wear clothing that can be used as a way of alerting both pedestrians and drivers.

Disclosed is a clothing-modification service for traffic control. The system comprises a situation-awareness component, a means for automatically changing clothing characteristics based on said situation, (optionally) a prediction component for projecting the future location of the clothing wearer, a means for on-the-fly assessment of the forecasted danger, and a means for communicating the potential danger as an alert or alarm to nearby vehicles, pedestrians, and pets. The alert can be delivered through the clothing or by other means. Visual/tactile changes to clothing can be intelligently configured based on an on-the-fly forecast of collision severity and likelihood.

In addition, the clothing on the person may change (e.g., change colors to alert drivers), and the nature of this visual change may be intelligently computed based on an on-the-fly assessment of the forecast collision severity and likelihood. This may capture the view of drivers and help avoid collisions in a manner more effective than simply having clothes with reflecting strips.

The core components of the novel system/method/service for clothing modification for traffic control purposes are:


• An information-gathering method to collect and communicate pedestrian information with the cloud server


• A module that computes the possible intersection between the pedestrian and the vehicle


• The communication of that potential intersection to both pedestrians' wearables in the vicinity of the intersection point and to the vehicles of the intersection point
