Abstract

A subsea data collection system includes a plurality of underwater sensors. At least one of the plurality of underwater sensors is coupled to subsea equipment being monitored. The subsea data collection system also includes at least one subsea analog-to-digital (AD) converter. The AD converter is electrically coupled to the plurality of underwater sensors and is configured to receive analog data signals transmitted by the underwater sensors. In addition, the AD converter is configured to transmit digital data packages corresponding to the analog data signals. At least one subsea network switching module is electrically coupled to the subsea AD converter. The subsea network switching module is configured to receive the digital data packages from the subsea AD converter and transmit the digital data packages via an optical fiber. 16

BACKGROUND

         [0001] Some subsea exploration and production operations, for example, oil and gas field operations, involve drilling and operating wells to locate and retrieve hydrocarbons. For many years, these drilling activities have increasingly expanded to subsea locations where drilling rigs are increasingly positioned at well sites in relatively deep water. Various types of equipment, e.g., drills, tubing, and pipes, are utilized at the well sites to explore the submerged reservoirs. The seafloor, however, is a harsh and remote environment, and many activities, e.g., drilling operations, involve considerable risk of environmental contamination. Accordingly, monitoring the safety and efficiency of the drilling operations is difficult. In some operations, the exploration and production equipment can be monitored by one or more sensors that transmit large amounts of data.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION

         [0002] In one aspect, a subsea data collection system is provided. The subsea data collection system includes a plurality of underwater sensors. At least one of the plurality of underwater sensors is coupled to subsea equipment being monitored. The subsea data collection system also includes at least one subsea analog-to-digital (AD) converter electrically coupled to the plurality of underwater sensors. The subsea AD converter is configured to receive analog data signals from the plurality of underwater sensors, and transmit digital data packages corresponding to the analog data signals. Moreover, the subsea data collection system includes at least one subsea network switching module electrically coupled to the at least one subsea AD converter. The at least one subsea network switching module is configured to receive the digital data packages from the at least one subsea AD converter, and transmit the digital data packages via an optical fiber.
