Abstract

In Marine steering applications redundant communication is required due to the rules of the classification societies. This requirement requires that network is tolerant of one single failure anywhere in the communication system. Typically this leads to a solution with ring network that equipped with multiple Ethernet-switches.

In the new solution, instead of equipping a single communication port device with an Ethernet-switch in order to provide a redundant communication, the transfer from a faulty network to an unfaulty network can be handled with switching relay that is controlled by the device's controller itself. By using this solution, the amount of the Ethernet switches can be significantly reduced while maintaining the same level of communication redundancy. Furthermore, communication is preserved by using a hardware based method instead of commonly used software based method.

The method described above makes the communication between devices equipped with a single communication port more reliable, simpler, cheaper and enables solutions that previously were unavailable.

Description

In the new solution, instead of equipping a single communication port device with an Ethernet -switch in order to provide a re- dundant communication, the transfer from a faulty network to an unfaulty network can be handled with switching relay that is controlled by the device's controller itself. This kind of network redundancy method is presented in Figure 1.



By using this solution, the amount of the Ethernet switches can be significantly reduced while maintaining the same level of communication redundancy. Furthermore, communication is preserved by using a hardware based method instead of commonly used software based method.

The method described above makes the communication between devices equipped with a single communication port more reli- able, simpler, cheaper and enables solutions that previously were unavailable.
