3 ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION

This invention disclosure proposed a modular power converter topology and the related control algorithm, which utilizes both series and parallel connection technique in order to widen the output voltage range and to increase the output power rating. EV charging is one of the suitable applications area.


3.1 Background of the invention

Nowadays, the energy capacity of battery is getting higher; the mileage of electrical vehicles are beneficial from this technology advancement. Accordingly, more and more scaled voltage & power EV chargers appeared on China EV charger market during last few years.

Among these EV chargers, the most popular technique is shown in Fig.1. It is based on the communication power supply technology. Similar power range, function, and topologies (AC/DC, isolated DC/DC) make EV chargers could be easily derived from the communication power supplies.

Fig.2 shows the basic topology of traditional EV charger (Patented by), which is also the "Isolated AC/DC module" of Fig.3. T

Fig.3 and Fig.4 shows the parallel large scale EV charger topology and control algorithm. The basic idea is utilizing power module parallel technique to increase the EV charger power rating.

charging current between different modules. However, as the EV charger usually has two charging mode: constant voltage charging mode and constant current charging mode. One master power module must could be able to work at / switch between the two modes respect to the requirement.

3.2 Statement of the problem

Lower efficiency at different output voltage;

-The communication power supply does not need wide output voltage range, but the EV charger need to charge different kinds of cars. Therefore, it needs to cover a wide output voltage range;


- When traditional communication power supply works at wide output condition, the efficiency will significantly degraded at the non-optimal operating point;
