DETAILED DESCRIPTION

     In case of a tsunami or other imminent threats to the population, emergency organizations have developed multiple heterogeneous methods to alert the people who may be at risk due to their physical location or their sensitivity. Usually, these organizations use a centralized system which broadcasts the information using a single or several communication media (SMS text messaging, email, social media networks (e.g., Facebook®, etc.).

    Presented herein is a method to extend this capability by using social media enabled Internet of Things (IOT) devices as a relay for the information. IOT devices, such as mobile phones, computers, connected watches, tablets, etc., enable individuals to trigger alerts that will spread virally if they can be correlated by a number of proposed techniques.

    The main idea of this method is to use IOT devices as a relay or gateway for spreading alert messages to a population.

    Take the example of a smartphone. A smartphone has SMS texting capability, and usually supports an e-mail client with and address book. The device has a contact list, and it may have social media networking clients (e.g., Facebook, Twitter®, or any other social media client). The smartphone also stores the user identifier and password to all these communication media. The smartphone may also include a location service (based on GPS, Wi-Fi®, Bluetooth® etc.).

    Consider the following scenario. An alert is generated by an official organization (such as a tsunami alert). The message is generated using a certificate to authenticate the validity of the alert and the organization. The alert is time stamped and contains geo location information (scope of the alert). The alert may contain GPS coordinates (locating the problem) and a range. This message is then broadcast using a communication system.

    Take the example of a social media network message or SMS text message. It is received by a device (smartphone). All clients in the smartphone have a dedicated agent that communicates between them to receive / send alert notifications. That is, the Facebook client agent is able to communicate with the Twitter client agent and the e-mail client agent etc., installed on the smartphone.
