Abstract

Merquat™ polymers (Lubrizol Advanced Materials) are cationic or ampholytic polymers renowned for their conditioning benefits delivered in body, face and hair cleansing systems, in rinse-off or leave-on conditioners and treatments as well as in skin care. In this study, it is proven that Merquat™ polymers effectively protect the hair against repeated styling routine using high temperature, even up to 230°C. Merquat™ polymers form a smooth and heat-resistant film, keeping the hair strong, less susceptible to breakage. In addition, these polymers also improve the lasting performance of the straightening and reduce hair frizziness over time, including in a humid environment.

Introduction

Hair is highly solicited due to washing, brushing, and bleaching, coloring or thermal straightening. Some of these treatments may even penetrate inside the hair cortex and affect the keratin proteins in a non- reversible way.

Increasing global sales of hair styling appliances confirm that using heat to style hair has been growing in popularity in recent years. In fact heat treatment has become a part of the daily grooming routine of many people. Hair can be readily damaged after a thermal treatment with the use of a blow dryer, a flat iron or curling iron. These thermal/mechanical treatments can affect the keratin proteins present inside the hair and lead to an irreversible damage and sometimes to hair breakage. After a thermal treatment, hair feels harsher, stiffer, weaker, more brittle, and shows flyaway.

Merquat™ polymers based on DADMAC(1) or MAPTAC(2) cationic monomers show a great potential as conditioning film formers and are evaluated for their ability to protect the hair against heat from styling appliances.

Measurements

To evaluate the impact of the heat on hair health, several instruments are utilized and different methods are tested to prove the ability of the Lubrizol ingredients to protect the hair against thermal damages. All tests are done on virgin hair tresses: European brown hair (straight or curly) - 2.5g - 20cm length - 1.9cm width or 4 hours bleached European hair - 2.5g - 17cm length - 1.9cm width.
