This disclosure relates in general to a person support apparatus having a deck defining a head end, a foot end, and a first and second laterally spaced-apart sides extending there between. A first siderail is disposed adjacent the first side of the deck, a second siderail is disposed adjacent the second of the deck. and a lever is positioned adjacent of the head end and the foot end, and is configured to pivot about a longitudinal axis extending generally parallel to the first and second sides. Width Adjustment in Person Support Apparatus

This disclosure generally relates to width adjusting mechanisms applied in a person support apparatus. More specifically, this disclosure relates to an apparatus that facilitates extension and retraction of the siderails of the person support apparatus, while also indicating an associated state of the person support apparatus.

Person support apparatuses in healthcare facilities may include one or more siderails attached adjacent sides of the person support apparatus. In certain situations, lateral space over the bed’s mattress between the siderails may be widened to increase the patient space.

The disclosure relates in general to a person support apparatus having a deck defining a head end, a foot end, and a first and second laterally spaced-apart sides extending there between.  A first siderail is disposed adjacent the first side of the deck, a second siderail is disposed adjacent the second of the deck, and a lever is positioned adjacent of the head end and the foot end, and is configured to pivot about a longitudinal axis extending generally parallel to the first and second sides.  Each of the first and second siderails are configured to move laterally relative to the deck.

  An angular manipulation device is pivotably connected to the deck. A cable is operably coupled between the lever and the angular manipulator device, and is configured so that movement of the lever about the longitudinal axis imparts movement to the cable, and the through the cable, imparts movement to the angular manipulation device.  First ends of each of first and second connecting rods are pivotably coupled to the angular manipulation device. Second ends of the first and second connecting rods are coupled to the first siderail and the second siderail, respectively, the width adjustment system is operable so that a pivotal movement of the lever about the longitudinal axis operates through the cable the angular manipulation device, and the first and second coupled rods to cause lateral movement of the first and second siderails relative to the deck.

A person support apparatus 102 is shown in FIG. 1. The person support apparatus 102, as shown, may be a bed used in hospitals and healthcare facilities. The person support apparatus 102 includes a deck 104, a first siderail 106, a second siderail 108, and ends 110a and 110b. 

The deck 104 is generally planar. A person support surface, such as a mattress 114 rests on deck 104.  Deck 104 defines first side 105, second side 107, first and second ends 110a and 110b, and a generally longitudinally extending axis 109.

The siderails 106 and 108 are movably coupled to the deck 104 in a lateral direct toward and away from axis 109 to facilitate an extension of the width of the patient support apparatus 102.
