Abstract:  Floating Production Storage and Offloading Systems (FPSOs) are expensive and complex.  One promising development alternative to an FPSO has been identified as standardized detachable floating production systems (FPS) with regional, submerged storage tanks. 

The semisubmersible Floating Production System (FPS) can be considered the best FPS solution from a cost and schedule perspective.  However, when ice conditions are present, such as in offshore Newfoundland, then a detachable mooring and riser system for FPS must be deployed.  The industry lacks a current solution for a detachable mooring and riser system for a semisubmersible FPS.  This publication proposes a detachable mooring and riser system for a semisubmersible FPS, along with a regional subsea storage solution. 

The detachable mooring and riser system for the semisubmersible FPS is envisioned to be a steel structure of the same horizontal dimensions of the existing base of the FPS.  The vertical dimension of the system is whatever is required to provide sufficient buoyancy to make the system only slightly negatively buoyant when it is detached from the FPS itself and for it to become neutrally buoyant at a depth of ~100m.  The detachable system is to be winched up to mate again with the FPS when it is safe to resume production.  Additionally, there must be robust mechanical clamping mechanisms for attaching the deta...
