Abstract

Maneuvering of an azimuthing propulsion ship is traditionally done using azimuth levers. Precise operation is difficult and requires sometimes inappropriate methods, such as tapping a lever with a pen. Feedback can normally be seen by analog indicators. In the improvement, a steering order is done by using a rotating plate for accurate order giving for each azimuthing propulsion unit. The plate may be have one or more projections projecting from the round plate to enable rotation by fingers. Within the circumference of the plate/ring, there may be provided a touch screen control providing RPM control with enhanced accuracy. Furthermore, there may be provided one touch panel to indicate actual angle, angle reference, RPM control, dimming options and control acceptance between units.

Background

Some functions, such as turning speed "Fast mode" is normally separately selectable by a user from steering control panel mak- ing system complex for operator to operate.

Improvement

The improvement relates to a steering device to replace azimuth levers, azimuth indicators, propulsion indicators, selection but- tons and dimmer units. There is provided a completely new way of operating ship and increasing accuracy of operation at the same time.

In the new system, a steering order is done by using a rotating plate for accurate order giving for each azimuthing propulsion unit. The plate may be have one or more projections projecting from the round plate to enable rotation by fingers. Within the circumference of the plate/ring, there may be provided a touch screen control providing RPM control with enhanced accuracy.

Furthermore, there may be provided one touch panel to indicate actual angle, angle reference, RPM control, dimming options and control acceptance between units. In the attached drawings the touch panel is shown to reside between the two plates each being provided for controlling the respective azimuthing propulsion unit.

Revolution order accuracy can be achieved by turning the plate really slowly, when the effect is only to a decimal of steering order. When the plate is turned faster, the effect is to a degree of steering order and if the plate is turned really fast, a so called fast mode turning...
