Abstract

This paper discloses devices for determining relative radial and axial motion between a first and second part in an engine wherein the second part is configured to move relative to the first part. The apparatus includes a small metal plate that has at least one detecting portion extending from it. The apparatus is attached to the first part such that the tabs extend toward a rotation path defined by the second part relative to the first part. The detecting portion is configured such that it defines a surface that is a known distance from the first part. When the second part moves relative to the first part the detecting portion will be deformed if it extends into the rotation path of the second part. Analysis of the deformation of the detecting portion allows one to determine how close the first part came to the second part during operation of the engine.

BACKGROUND


[0002] The present disclosure relates to devices for determining how close two parts such as a blade in a nozzle within an aircraft engine came to each other during operation of the aircraft engine.


[0003] Conventionally it is difficult to determine how close two parts that move relative to each other come during operation of an engine. Generally, when two parts come too close together, marks or damage occur on at least one of the parts. Such damage can lead to inefficiency or even failure of the engine. It is also possible for two parts to become spaced too far apart. Such excessive spacing can cause inefficiencies in the engine. Therefore it is desired to determine how close to parts are to each other during operation without damage.


[0004] This need is addressed by providing devices for determining how close two parts came to each other during operation of an engine within a predetermined accuracy. The devices can include a pair of tabs spaced-away from one of the parts in

two different predetermined amounts or a honeycomb block of known dimension and distance away from at least one part that is designed to abrade with contact.

[0006] the figures show rub tabs that can be used to determine an actual clearance range of blades and nozzles by providing at least two tabs each having a known starting clearance relative to the parts;


[0007] the figures show rub plugs that are configured to bolt to a case such that a shaft extends toward a flow path and a piece of honeycombed material is braced on to the end of the shaft and the honeycomb material is dimensioned to be a predetermined distance from the case and to be abraded by an adjacent blade; and


[0008] the figures show rub strips for determining fan clearances and the rub strips are configured to be adhered between the case and fan-blade tips.
