A user can receive directions from one point to another through a couple of methods. One method is to use macro-location services such as a global positioning system (GPS). This method provides a good time estimate for travel, but does not consider potential obstacles in the user's path. Another method is to use micro-location services such as Wi-Fi. This second method provides a more accurate estimate of the travel time from one place to another; however, it is only is implemented at venue level such as a retail store, stadium, office building, etc.

The problem arises when a person wants to get the optimal path from point A to point Bin a scenario in which both micro- and macro-location technologies are needed. For example, a shopping outlet mall where some of the bigger retail stores have a need for indoor mapping but to get between the outdoor stores, outdoor GPS might be necessary. With current solutions, the must separately ask for directions for each of the individual indoor and outdoor locations, as well as switch between applications/ technologies on the mobile device. A method or system is needed that saves battery power and does not use unnecessary technologies in order to assist in user navigation.

The novel system uses a combination of micro- and macro-location technologies to create more accurate and precise paths for directional guidance.

By combining micro- and macro-location technologies, the system creates a path that is more detailed than macro-location services alone and increases the path scope over micro-location services alone. The system reduces GPS service usage for mobile device. Product paths are up-to-date with the latest venue infrastructure and the travel time is more precise. In addition, the system can correlate types of "zones" people travel though in order to get to a final destination
