Disclosed is a method and system for preprocessing a large set of eligible ads to generate a smaller set of important and diverse ads for optimizing total likelihood of ad click and/or ad conversion. The method employs a determinantal point process (DPP) to preprocess the large set of eligible ads to obtain the smaller set of eligible ads. Thereafter, the smaller set of important and diverse ads are fed to an ad selection algorithm for showing the ads to a user.

Abstract

Description

In advertising platforms, given an ad impression opportunity, there are hundreds of thousands of eligible ads that can be shown to a user. Every eligible ad has to be evaluated by ad selection algorithm to calculate click through rate (or conversion rate) in order to decide which ad to show (or bid for).  Further, impressions for a user is considered independently to optimize an expected revenue, so the diversity of the ads shown to the user is not considered. Therefore, there is a need to pre-select a diverse set of ads (a small set) for each user such that evaluation process is more efficient, and the set of ads are diverse such that users' preferences over different types of ads can be explored.
