Problem:

Today’s SmartPhone with multiple connectors, microphones, speakers and other mechanical openings is not 100% water proofed and difficult to be really water resistant. Some modern smartphones have numerous modifications to repel water and moisture during normal usage.

If you look at the phone USB connector on such phones, it is covered by a small, matching plug that offers water resistance – but it is unreliable and considered the primary point of failure.

Water Resistance

Some phones are certified to IP67, a standard that denotes a certain level of water and dust resistance. What does it mean? These phones can withstand being submerged in water, and won't let dust in.

Proposed solution:

In order to combat the moisture entry inside of the phone, the proposed idea takes advantage of a modified USB polymer plug. In particular, a “Shape Memory Polymers (SMPs) and its properties when in contact with moisture. When the USB plus is inserted into the USB connector bay, it needs to be secure and sealed to repel water. Current solutions do not offer this feature that is reliable.
