Cognitive Home Water Reuse Management

Every day, homes use a lot of clean water; however, not all uses actually require clean

water. For example, toilets and irrigation systems can use second-hand water. Properly reusing home water can save a significant amount of fresh water with minimum or no impact to common water usage behaviors.

Prior art exists on monitoring the home water usage pattern and for collecting the used home water for secondary usage. However, the main challenge is finding a way to seamlessly and intelligently integrate the home water usage monitoring and secondary usage into the daily home activities, so that people do not need to consciously read meters and set configurations. All water management tasks need to be done automatically with the objectives of maximum water savings and minimum human inconvenience. To this end, no prior art exists so far.

The novel contribution is a method and system for cognitive home water reuse management. The key innovation lies in the method and system to compute the optimal water saving rules and patterns in a cognitive way (e.g., perception, reasoning, relating, and learning).

The system uses sensors at first-hand water consuming devices (e.g., faucets, showers) to measure the water usage patterns (i.e., time of the day, day of the week) and the water cleanness levels (i.e., reusable, not reusable). Sensors at second-hand

water consuming devices (e.g., toilet, irrigation system) measure the water usage patterns (e.g., when water is used and how much is needed) from that point of output. Water tanks (and pumps if needed) store and use the second hand water (similar to an underground oil tank, but may be set in the side yard in the manner of an air conditioning unit).
