Abstract

Disclosed is a method that determines a person’s affinity toward mental disorders by analyzing the individual’s social media interactions, web browsing, context, and medical profile. The system uses a corpus of known mental disorders and associated treatments to find patterns in the analyzed user data and determine actions for escalations of a detected case, the need of medical/psychological assistance, and the need to denounce/block malicious contacts/websites.

More than 90% of children who die by suicide have a mental health condition [1].Just over half (50.6%) of children aged 8-15 received mental health services in the previous year [2]. Mood disorders, including major depression, dysthymic disorder, and bipolar disorder, are the third most common cause of hospitalization in the U.S. for both youth and adults aged 18-44.

The culture and social pressures are the root causes of some of these mental disorders . For example, bullying is a determined cause for bulimia by anxiety [3], which is considered an eating disorder within mental health conditions [4].

The consequences of the lack of treatment of mental disorders affect the population sectors that are exposed to technology , the

web, and the social networks. For example, teenagers who are common users of social media are the most affected population of the bulimia due to bullying.

The novel contribution is a system and method for Cognitive Health Analytics. The method leverages people's exposure to web and social networks to help to determine mental disorders at any level, provide a diagnosis, and offer a treatment as well as actions to attend the case. The core novelty is a method to correlate virtual interactions to identify symptoms and patterns of possible harmful interactions to the psychological integrity of the participants, and then recommend actions based on the mental disorders treatment corpus.

This system offers an automatic assistant for mental health evaluation to help doctors to better treat the patients in proactive and reactive ways, to help parents and family become aware of the person's condition, and help authorities detect malicious contacts and content producers.

The Cognitive Health Analytics system uses cognitive capabilities to capture and understand interactions of individuals in web and social media. The system analyzes the collected data to detect known psychological trends for possible mental disorders (e.g., depression, bipolarity, etc.) and its triggers or causes such as bullying and low self-esteem. The system performs as an assistant for doctors because it sends the resulting information to the person's/patient's medical profile.

The system accommodates levels of escalation, which allow the detection of initial states of a disorder. The system can inform parents, directly recommend experts to treat the case (including advice treatment), and denounce child molesters or instigators. Some aspects considered in the system for the analysis are sentiment, culture, language, age etc.
