Every day, thousands of people use mass transport (e.g., city buses, hired buses, vans, etc.) and are somewhat hindered by the number of stops, large number of people using such means of transport, or the lack of public transportation lines in certain areas or neighborhoods. Furthermore, inefficient organization and poor business practices not only cause public transportation companies financial distress, but also lead to an increase in overall traffic and congestion when people opt to drive individual vehicles because public transit is not satisfactory. Public transportation companies need better methods to orchestrate and plan the demand for vehicles using effective timetables, understanding of regional demands, and accurate estimations of the expected number of passengers.

The novel contribution is a cloud platform that uses a cognitive computing component and analytics capabilities to create common itineraries of mass transport vehicles (e.g., buses, vans, etc.) on demand in real-time for passengers that intend to optimize time and share the same transport with other passengers in a smarter way.

The proposed solution encompasses a collaborative platform that creates flexible itineraries on demand covering regions and neighborhoods that are either partially covered or not covered by public transportation, helping users that that have similar destinations. In addition, companies responsible for public or mass transportation can identify and predict the demand for transport in certain regions and manage the vehicles using historical data and events monitored from social media .

The main novelty is the use of cognitive/analytics components to allow the instant creation of common itineraries and predict the demand for mass transportation when events that may impact transportation are occurring in certain locations . Those events are identified through social media monitoring. The system becomes more accurate over time and expands the possibilities of implementation of cognitive systems and social media monitoring.

The solution is composed of a cognitive/analytics system that gathers requests from users that intend to use and share buses, vans, etc. with other people. It is supported by a cloud platform that interconnects end users, mass transportation companies, and events monitoring from social media.

Users make transportation requests via mobile devices, tablets, personal computers (PCs), etc., and register in a cloud platform. The system analyzes the requests, checks the data available, and searches for patterns in order to identify potential regions that may need a new transportation line and determine the itinerary and stops in virtual a map.
