Abstract

The invention proposes a system and method for monitoring the level of oxygen in air mixed with diluent or exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) for better regulation of air-fuel ratio in the fuel system using. The oxygen is monitored using one or more sensors at the intake chamber, where the EGR and air-fuel mixture are allowed to mix, and the mixture is fed into the engine. The signal from the oxygen sensor or sensors is used as a parameter for the fuel rate and duration in the map of the control system or engine control module to meet target values of efficiency or emissions. The system and method could also be implemented in any type of fuel system such as blow through or draw through. This method provides higher accuracy and capacity to control the required air to fuel ratio required for robust performance in terms of efficiency or emissions.

BACKGROUND

The invention relates to internal combustion engines and in particular to system and method of regulating air-fuel mixture for an engine with exhaust gas recirculation (EGR). Generally, air and recirculated exhaust gases are mixed together in the intake of the fuel system of an engine, for more efficient combustion or to increase the CO2 content in exhaust for carbon capture purposes. Accurate monitoring of the level of oxygen is necessary as the air-fuel mixture with EGR travels throughout the intake upstream of the fuel system. Without accurate measurement of oxygen levels in the air-fuel mixture, the fuel system may over or under compensate, causing the engine to miss the target for achieving efficiency, performance, or emission levels. Thus, there is a need for a system and method for sensing the level of oxygen after a stream of air and EGR are mixed, so that the fuel system could compensate and deliver better control over some critical parameters.

The invention proposes a system and method for monitoring the level of oxygen in air mixed with diluent or exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) for better regulation of air-fuel ratio in the fuel system such as air-fuel mixer, or fuel injector using an oxygen sensor, as shown in FIG. 1.
