Abstract

The present disclosure relates to a trenching device for cutting a trench. The trenching device includes a rock wheel, a boom that carries the rock wheel, and a pressure foot unit carried with the boom. The pressure foot unit includes a base plate adapted to apply downward pressure to the ground on opposite sides of the rock wheel adjacent to an active cutting zone of the trenching device during trenching. The trenching device also includes a pressure foot positioning system for allowing the trenching device to be set at a plurality of different depth settings to trench at different cutting depths.

Technical Field

         The present disclosure relates generally to trenching devices. More particularly, the present disclosure relates to trenching devices that include rock wheels.

Background

         When utility lines are installed beneath existing road surfaces (e.g., under asphalt or concrete), it is required to trench through the road surface. In performing this type of trenching, it is desirable to minimize the destruction of the existing road surface. Therefore, it is desirable for the trench to be as narrow as

possible. It is also desirable for the trench to have a clean edge. However, traditional trenching devices with rock wheels can often generate a rough edged trench. This is due, at least in part, by aggregate from under the pavement surface being carried through the cut in the pavement, thereby generating a rough or jagged edge. Improvements are desired in this area.

Summary

         Aspects of the present disclosure relate to a rock wheel type trenching device having an active cutting area pressing system that is capable of applying sufficient downward pressure to hold down the top edges of a cut trench when the rock wheel attempts to carry aggregate up through the trench, so as to produce a clean and

even trench edge. Aspects of the present disclosure are particularly applicable for making narrow trenches in materials such as asphalt or concrete, without disrupting adjacent regions of the asphalt or concrete.

         Another aspect of the present disclosure relates to a rock wheel type trenching device including a pressure foot unit that provides downward pressure for

addressing the above described problems and that is also readily adjustable to allow the rock wheel type device to be used to cut multiple different trench depths.

         Still another aspect of the present disclosure relates to a rock wheel type trenching device having a spoil discharge structure positioned at an active cutting zone of the rock wheel for preventing spoil from being carried around the rock wheel and being deposited back into the trench. In certain examples, the rock wheel type trenching device has a primary spoil discharge structure located at the active cutting

region of the rock wheel and a secondary spoil discharge structure positioned downstream from the primary spoil discharge structure.

         A further aspect of the present disclosure relates to a rock wheel type trenching device having a trench cleaner and a utility line deployment chute that attaches to the trench cleaner so as to be carried with the trench cleaner. In certain

examples, the utility line deployment chute can be mounted at different positions on the trench cleaner that correspond to different trench cutting depth settings of the rock wheel type trenching device.
