Abstract

The invention proposes an optimized design to the injection system for injecting a chemical into a process stream or pipeline. The system involves a tangential injection of chemical fluid for treatment of process stream piping. The injection system is placed tangentially or inclined to the main pipe, which produces a swirling flow of injected fluid along the inner surface of the pipe. The swirling flow of the fluid provides uniform and better pipe-wall coverage, leading to better corrosion and fouling resistance. The system also maximizes the efficiency of such treatment.

NOVEL INJECTION SYSTEM FOR PROCESS STREAMS

BACKGROUND

The invention relates to a system for injecting chemical into a process stream for providing an efficient treatment program. In oil and natural gas refining and processing applications, chemical fluids such as hydrogen sulfide scavengers, emulsion breakers, corrosion inhibitors, etc. are used for corrosion and fouling treatments of the pipelines. The design for an injection system is developed by trial and error method and experiential knowledge. Most of the injection systems utilize injector quills as they are economical, but they produce large and uneven liquid droplets. In conventional quills, the injected fluid remains at the bottom of the pipe due to gravity and the bottom of the pipe wall alone is treated. Thus, the designs adopted in current injection systems do not assure uniform pipe-wall coverage and good performance even on selecting good treatment chemistry. Therefore there is a need for improved injection system for uniform application and distribution of chemicals to achieve efficient treatment in process piping applications.
