Abstract

The invention relates to diverter in marine oil or gas drilling installations and design improvements therefor. The invention proposes a new design of diverter end cap and insert packer with bolt retention for drilling system. The new end cap design includes V-shaped free end side slots where the auxiliary lines could be incorporated without a total dis-assembly of the module during rig operations. Another design feature is the use of special partially threaded bolts for one-way installation, to prevent loose bolts from falling out of the diverter assembly. A similar bolt retention design is used for the insert packer. The advantages of the invention include smaller size, less weight, smaller tools and easy handling in critical path.

DIVERTER INSERT WITH BOLT RETENTION DESIGN

BACKGROUND

The invention relates to diverter in marine oil or gas drilling installations and design improvements therefor. Subsea umbilicals are deployed to supply necessary control, energy (electric, hydraulic) and chemicals to subsea installations. In drilling system, a diverter insert greatly improves drilling rig safety during completion and work over operations. A diverter or annular blowout preventer (BOP) could fail to seal the crevices between the drill pipe and auxiliary lines in the wellbore, suitable for explosive gases to reach the drill floor. To overcome this problem, there is a need for an improved diverter end fitting and insert design for drilling system.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DRAWINGS

The invention discloses a new design of diverter insert packer with bolt retention and free end caps for drilling system, wherein:

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

The invention proposes a new design of diverter end cap and insert packer with bolt retention for drilling system. As shown in FIG. 1, the diverter includes a new end cap design of 13 3/8” OD (outer diameter). The new end cap design includes V-shaped free end side slots where the auxiliary lines could be incorporated without a total dis-assembly of the module during rig operations.

Another design feature is the use of special partially threaded bolts for one-way installation, to prevent loose bolts from falling out of the diverter assembly. As shown in section in FIG. 2, the end cap is affixed using 10 x 3/8” special partially threaded bolts inserted and screwed in the tapered end cap of the umbilical. The special bolt could move in freely as the threaded front portion passes through a threaded collar or nut in the top half and is mated to corresponding threaded portion in the bottom half.
