Abstract

In this improvement it is proposed to combine pumpjet/nozzle type technology to the RudderPod (trademark by ABB Oy) principle where the rudder is integrated into the pod hull structure. Integration means both hydrodynamics and structures. The structures can physically integrated or apart, whichever is beneficial for hydrodynamics. Such a solution simplifies the steering system and the physical dimensions of the steering system.

Background

In underwater rotatable propulsion units (pods), a so called "pumpjet" with a nozzle and stator blades around and before the propeller has been investigated in connection with a pulling propeller, that is, the propeller is in the fore head of the propulsion unit in the princi- pal travel direction.

Improvement

In this improvement it is proposed to combine pumpjet type technology to the Rudder- PodTM (trademark by ABB Oy) principle where the rudder is integrated into the pod hull structure. Integration means both hydrodynamics and structures. The structures can phys- ically integrated or apart, whichever is beneficial for hydrodynamics. Such a solution sim- plifies the steering system and the physical dimensions of the steering system.

Results from efficiency tests with Azipod® (a registered trademark of ABB Oy) propulsion unit with pumpjet type technology have been promising in a wide speed range. On the other hand ABB has test RudderPod in CRP (Contra rotating propeller) applications and the results has been somewhat promising but only at certain very limited speed window.

Replacing CRP application with pumpjet type technology in RudderPod would give high efficiency propulsion unit in wide speed range with compact steering system.
