Research has shown that sitting for prolonged hours a day causes a negative health effect . To prevent these negative consequences, more and more people are using stand-up desks. However, other research has shown that standing for too long is also not good. Sitting or standing for prolonged periods also limits the mental focus.

The solution is for people to operate throughout the day in a combination of standing and sitting positions , depending on a person's physical state. Some technology is available that automatically prompts a user to change position. These systems often interrupt the user to change posture at inconvenient moments, and become bothersome.

The novel contribution is a method and system to provide real-time posture change recommendations to a user throughout the

workday. The system helps the user balance the work routine among standing, sitting, and walking times. The system uses sensors to monitor the user's posture through pressure points. By combining this information with scheduled calendar events and the measured level of mental focus, the system sends the user suggestions to stand, sit, or walk.

The following scenarios represent possible embodiments of the system.

As a user stands behind a stand-up desk, sensors in the user's shoes monitor the level and duration of applied pressure on each foot as well as indications of posture changes. Indicators that a user has been standing for an unhealthy period are shifting weight back-and-forth between legs or standing in the same position for too long. The system recognizes that a user exceeds a threshold for healthy standing.
