Abstract

A system for collecting, processing/analysing data about a user's activity patterns, relating to body movements that could lead to Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI). User gets feedback based on the data collected and processed, giving them the opportunity to modify their behaviour in order to prevent the injury from occurring, rather than seeking help after event.

Repetitive strain injury (RSI) is caused when someone repeats a physical action many times. Often the cause is not identified until the individual is diagnosed with RSI. Even then the cause is identified using anecdotal information. The problem is that is very hard to know at the time if actions are likely to lead to RSI. By the time the injury is sufficient to warrant medical attention, productivity and health have already been negatively impacted.

    A system for collecting, processing/analysing data about a user's activity patterns, relating to body movements that could lead to Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI). User gets feedback based on the data collected and processed, giving them the opportunity to modify their behaviour in order to prevent the injury from occurring, rather than seeking help after event.

    A person using our system would wear some form of tracking device ( e.g. built into a glove or a wristband) and / or be monitored on camera. The device(s) would collect data about intensity of grip, muscle strain, finger movements, hand and arm movements. Our system would then process this data to identify potentially harmful patterns.
