Abstract

Sending data between two devices can be problematic if both parties don't have the same technology. Our solution to this problem is to use hardware that is available in all modern mobile devices to pair two devices together in order to initiate data transfer. This would entail using the mobile device's vibrator and gyroscope to transfer the IP network address using vibration patterns between the devices. This address would then be used to initiate data transfer using Wi-Fi or a mobile network, without the need for a central/back-end server.

Simplifies process of data transfer between two mobile devices, without the need of extra hardware or a central service for authentication.

Sending data from one device to another can be troublesome and time consuming. This also requires the use of a server to store user information such as their current IP, and to mediate the data transfer. We propose using vibrations of a mobile device to encode its unique address. First, the receiving device transforms its IP address into vibrations, that are detected by the sending device. The sending device translates these vibrations back into an IP address that it can now use to transfer a file.

    To start the file transfer process, the users must indicate to their devices that they want to send or receive data, by (for example) tapping a button in the file transfer software's interface. To establish the connection, the receiver device starts the vibration sequence, encoding the IP address digits using vibration intensity (1 = 10% intensity, 2= 20% intensity and so on). This will initially be done at a vibration every 500ms (for example). This would transfer the receiver's IP address in a maximum time of 6 seconds (10 vibration levels allowing 10 digits, with 12 digits in an IP address).
