Abstract

The presented disclosure outlines the idea of low cost measurements of breaker travel curve. Travel curve measurements are necessary to determine actual speed of breaker stroke based on which it is possible to estimate breaker wear which is critical for any maintenance related operation. Typically those measurements are realized by encoder which is measuring rotating movement of the shaft. Based on the known geometry of breaker mechanism it is possible to convert rotating shaft position into linear travel curve of breaker stroke. In existing solutions such encoder is connected to a data acquisition system which converts the data into digital format and allows its further analysis. In the presented invention encoder is substituted with laser based, linear movement measurements system.

1. Introduction

The presented invention outlines the idea of low cost measurements of breaker travel curve. The below sections present an example of how to perform measurements of breaker travel curve with the proposed low cost, laser based system.


2. Detail description

Main idea for the measurements system is based on the measurements of reflection of emitted laser light as presented in Figure 1.

Reflective bar contains part of material that reflects the laser light and part that absorbs it. While reflective bar is moving, laser light is reflected while passing reflective part and not reflected while passing non-reflective bars. Since bars are of known dimension it is possible to correlate the reflection signal to movement distance.


3. Example of implementation

In the presented example reflective material was in the form of adhesive tape. On the reflective part of material a 1 mm bars were printed by standard office printer. Result is presented in Figure 2.

Used laser and receiver were supplied by 3.3 V and receiver is returning voltage proportional to the intensity of reflected light. Example of laser and receiver are presented in Figure 3.

In this example laser and receiver are connected to microcontroller with Bluetooth which enables communication to mobile phone. Arrangements of laser, receiver and reflective bar on the breaker is presented in Figure 4.
