Abstract

Described herein is a new Volatile organic compounds (VOC) degassing method by optimizing twin screw extruder to lower down the VOC content in heavy layer mats that utilizes Vistamaxx™ performance polymers as the main carrier resins. Normally, twin screw extruder is the main compounding equipment in manufacturing heavy layer mats (HLM) but in most cases, it is not in good condition which cannot effectively degassing most of VOC items. In this study, we applied vacuum system and stripping agents injector in twin screw extruder with appropriate screw configuration to achieve satisfactory VOC degassing results.

Background:


In the past few years, referring to the auto-interior air quality and food safety, Chinese government issued VOC standard for auto-cabinet emission and food law for packaging safety. The food law has zero tolerance to VOC while auto-industry also had requirement on the limit of VOC items (shown below)
