Abstract

Disclosed is a method and apparatus that extend the current Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) standards to enable monitoring of the cognitive ecosystem. The novel apparatus, termed Cognitive Performance and Management monitor (CPMM), provides open interface based monitoring and management of cognitive models.

Method and Apparatus for Standards Based Management and Monitoring of Cognitive Capabilities

Big Data platforms enable industry trends toward Cognitive Models , herein referred to as Cognitive Entities (CE) . CEs are aimed to remember the past, interact with humans, continuously learn, and refine the responses for future. Traditional network management uses Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) to manage and monitor network equipment. The existing management and monitoring tools are meant for cognitive-specific capabilities.

As the cognitive capabilities are being offered for external consumers, a method is needed to remotely manage the offerings through standards-based interfaces. Immaterial of the patterns, an open interface enabled management capability is needed. As cognitive capabilities do not have an exclusive monitoring and/or management solution, a method is needed to extend the open interface standard for cognitive models.

The novel contribution is an apparatus for leveraging the existing network management applications through open interfaces in order to monitor the cognitive ecosystem. The current SNMP Management Information Base Systems (MIBS) used to resource monitoring and management can be extended to monitor the cognitive components. (Figures 1 and 2)

The novel apparatus, termed the CPMM Manager (CPMMM), provides open interface based monitoring and management of cognitive models (i.e. Fault, Configuration, Accounting, Performance, and Security (FCAPS) solutions). In addition, the CPMM provides the following:

 Tiered architecture for monitoring and management of cognitive models

 Object identifiers for cognitive parameters exposed to consuming managers (e.g., monitoring statistics, configuration, billing, etc.)

 Guarding of the management of cognitive parameter...
