Method and System for Providing a User Friendly Mechanism for Scanning a Distributed File System Environment Disclosed is a method and system for providing a user friendly mechanism for scanning a distributed file system environment.
The system provides an improved find tool for enabling administrators to efficiently scan one or more distributed file systems. The find tool as provided by the system includes all or pertinent subset of options offered by "find*", one of the Unix system's utilities and performance benefits of the mmapplypolicy utility of General Parallel File System (GPFS*). The time required to run the scan drops significantly as compared to find, and the time required to prepare the scan drops significantly as compared to using mmapplypolicy directly.
The find tool as disclosed herein enables an administrator to select one of the following three modes for executing the scan:
1. list files matching these characteristics 2. delete files matching these characteristics 3. execute a command against files matching these characteristic
To start with, the find tool flags are required to be translated into the mmapplypolicy policy language. Consider the following example:
[-path pattern1[,pattern2,...] ]
Only include objects whose full paths match one of these patterns Give '_' for a single wild character and '%' for the equivalent of * Internal translation:
RULE 'automatically generated mmapplypolicy policy rule' ...

AND (PATH_NAME LIKE '%pattern1%' OR PATH_NAME LIKE '%pattern2%' OR ...)
Once translation process finishes, a mmapplypolicy policy is automatically generated based on the find flags. A
mmapplypolicy includes rules pertaining to matching files which are yet to be processed as per the...
