Abstract

The detection of Helium offers insight to the possibility of encountering hydrocarbons while drilling. The manner of detection would be a portable Helium gas analyzer behind the bit. All the critical pieces of the spectrometer would be miniature (including the trap) and would be capable of capturing and detecting only the Helium ions given a certain mass to charge ratio. The detector is set to capture the deflection in the chamber of the Helium. This fully self-contained system will also include a micro sensor array (MEMS) technology in order to signal to the surface the concentration of Helium.

Description:  The device for detection of helium while drilling will allow for better knowledge as to the location of hydrocarbons as the presence of helium and hydrocarbons is linked. The best way to detect helium is in a miniature mass spectrometer placed behind the bit which can transfer the data to the surface in real time.
