Abstract

The following idea concerns aircraft freighters. It is an objective of this idea to avoid damages to the barrier wall or net (see first figure, arrow A) being located between the cargo part and the cockpit of an aircraft freighter. A damage of the barrier wall or net is avoided by crushable cargo in front of rigid cargo. The crushable cargo should prevent a critical contact between rigid cargo and the barrier net.

The following idea concerns aircraft freighters. It is an objective of this idea to avoid damages to the barrier wall or net (see first figure, arrow A) being located between the cargo part and the cockpit of an aircraft freighter.

A damage of the barrier wall or net is avoided by crushable cargo in front of rigid cargo. The crushable cargo should prevent a critical contact between rigid cargo and the barrier net.

Impact protection

The crushable load dissipates impact energy of rigid cargo to avoid damages of the installed barrier net. Energy absorption is realized by permanent deformation of the material, either through brittle fracture or plastic deformation.

A newly designed foam or another crushable load cushioning system has - in case of an emergency deceleration or crash - to spread the force of an impact correlating to a 9g accelerated mass of 2.4 t rigid cargo. The foam system is responsible for the bulk energy absorption and protection of the barrier net.

Physical properties of the material like density, resiliency and energy absorption characteristics, and designers must consider the severity of impacts to properly select the (foam) material. It is an objective of the crushable load cushioning system to prevent a breaking through of rigid load leading to a residual impact being transferred directly into the barrier net under the given 9g condition.
