Abstract

Taper roller bearings are designed to work with axial endplay or preload depending on the application and working conditions. Due to dimensional and geometric tolerances of the parts involved in the assembly of these bearings, the setting of endplay or preload is required to be adjusted. The taper roller bearing setting is usually done by shimming using shims of different thickness or washers. The method presented here consists of a threaded bore and an external threaded nut that contacts the bearing cup. The innovation is the way to achieve a more precise adjustment by having different geometry "locking washers".

DESCRIPTION

     Current setting methods presents a lot of disadvantages regarding complexity of the process and consequently time and cost. The normal process to shim taper roller bearings is done by using different thickness shims by measuring the gap in the assembly, selecting and measuring the shims required to be installed. The setting with a threaded nut is also used, but the way to lock the nut (that is used to fix axially the taper roller bearing races) is providing bad resolution of the setting especially when diameters are small. The concept of using different geometry locking washers enable us to get fine resolution of the shimming and also make the setting process more simple and fast.
