Abstract

A method and system is disclosed for detecting tone of incoming or outgoing messages. Further, the method and system, after detecting the tone of a message, displays the tone of the message to a user by means of user interface (UI) elements. This enables the user of the message to understand the tone of the message and gauge the importance/delicacy of the message.

Method and System of Detecting Tone of a Message

Description

Disclosed is a method and system for detecting tone of incoming or outgoing messages.  A message can be, but need not be limited to, a text message, an instant message, an email and/or a posting such as a comment or social network posting.  Further, the method and system, after detecting the tone of a message, displays the tone of the message to a user by means of user interface (UI) elements.  This enables the user of the message to understand the tone of the message and gauge the importance/delicacy of the message.

In one implementation, the method and system analyzes the words and phrases in the incoming and outgoing messages to recognize a set of features using a supervised learning algorithm.  The set of features can be a training set used to generate classifiers for each tone of the incoming and outgoing messages being considered.  The classifiers determine a probability for each considered tone of the incoming and outgoing messages based on the given words and phrases.

For instance, in the case of text or instant messaging, the us...
