Abstract

A method and system is disclosed for detecting a wrong recipient entry in an email. The method and system detects if a user accidentally selects or inputs a wrong recipient to a list of recipients for an email based on various approaches such as utilizing Bayesian statistics for monitoring email history for a given recipient, determining a recipient's context or performing an informal vocabulary analysis. If the wrong recipient is detected, the method and system alerts the user of the wrong recipient entry.

Method and System for Detecting a Wrong Recipient Entry in an Email

Abstract

A method and system is disclosed for detecting a wrong recipient entry in an email.  The method and system detects if a user accidentally selects or inputs a wrong recipient to a list of recipients for an email based on various approaches such as utilizing Bayesian statistics for monitoring email history for a given recipient, determining a recipient’s context or performing an informal vocabulary analysis.  If the wrong recipient is detected, the method and system alerts the user of the wrong recipient entry.

Description

Disclosed is a method and system for detecting a wrong recipient entry in an email.  Further, the method and system also applies to any content that calls out individuals as recipients, mentions, callouts or access constraints including text messaging, instant messaging or social networking posts from social networking services or sites such as, but not limited to, LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook and the like.

In one implementation, the method and system implements Bayesian statistics that utilizes Bayes’ theorem to determine if the probability of the given recipient is intended.

The specific equation based on Bayes’ theorem is:

Pr(I|W) = (Pr(W|I) * Pr(I)) / (Pr(W|I) * Pr(I) + Pr(W|U) * Pr(U))

Pr(I|W) - Probability the given recipient is intended, given the message contains the given word.

Pr(W|I) - Probability the given word appears in messages to the given recipient.

Pr(I) - Probability of messages being sent to the given recipient.

Pr(W|U) - Probabil...
