Abstract

The idea is to transparently move data at a subfile / subdisk level between the multiple tiers (different sector size disks) based on I/O size in which data is accessed to avoid Read- Modify-Write (RMW) / extra reads.

Problem Statement

4K sector size disks are being used along-with 512 sector size disks.

If the volume has mixed disks with different sector size, on 4K sector size disk, volume manager needs to perform:
- Read-Modify-Write (RMW) for write I/O smaller than 4K or 4K unaligned offset / length.
- Read the entire 4K physical sector for read I/O smaller than 4K or 4K unaligned offset / length.

Publication Description

On subfile / subdisk level, we could detect if most of the I/Os cause Read-Modify-Write (RMW) or extra reads on 4K disk and transparently move data to 512 sector disk. Similarly, when we detect 4K or larger I/Os on 512 sector disk, transparently move data to 4K sector disk. This would improve the overall IOPS and throughput of the system.
