Determining the value of technology improvements introduced in modern complex mainframe systems to determine the potential relevant benefit realization can be a daunting challenge. Although extensive documentation and tools that describe generic

technical benefits exist, the focus has shifted to a more holistic approach that incorporates all of the recently introduced hardware innovations rather than a historical benefit such as improved processor speed. As such, there is a need to translate the generic technical benefits into a specific value proposition estimation relevant to individual system configurations and workloads.

Modern complex mainframe systems are increasingly workload dependent, and a specific value proposition can be determined via in-depth technical analyses. However, such analyses could require time consuming and costly manual effort.

Disclosed is a user-friendly, cost effective system and method for translating all technical improvements into estimated business value to facilitate business case development. The estimated business value is represented as potential processor, MSUs, ZIIPs, and IFLs savings.

The method and system provides a tool that evaluates technical benefits when migrating from a prior generation mainframe system to the most current generally available mainframe system and translates technical benefits into estimated cost savings. The tool works with N-1, N-2, and N-3 system generations and also includes pricing data for 45 countries.

The method and system analyzes individual system configurations and workloads and summarizes three potential gain types:


• All = The potential benefit is available for all workloads running on the machine, independent of its characteristic.


• Transparent = The potential benefit is available for the specific quantified

workload only, when the new machine plus new software is installed.

• Project = The potential benefit is available for the specific quantified workload only, when a project to implement the workload is completed.
