Abstract

In various exemplary embodiments, the present disclosure includes a device with MEMS Mirror, which is widely used for the fabrication of commercially available Variable optical attenuators (VOAs). These VOA are implemented in dedicated hermetic packages with fiber pigtails. The device can be qualified for use in telecommunication equipment. That is, the present disclosure describes a VOA and output tap monitor function compatible for integration with other functions such as optical modulators within a single hermetic package. The present disclosure includes a MEMS mirror, a beam splitter, a free space pin hole and a monitor photodiode. Advantageously, the present disclosure provides a solution to the integration of multiple functions in a single hermetic package for optical communication. The ability to realize an output tap monitor is of great importance. This novel approach realizes both the VOA and Tap functions in a very small volume and in a manner that is compatible with the integration of optical modulator or other equivalent devices. This is accomplished avoiding the larger form factor of a fiber tap monitor device external to the module housing.

VARIABLE OPTICAL ATTENUATOR WITH OUTPUT TAP

ABSTRACT

[0001]In various exemplary embodiments, the present disclosure includes a device with MEMS Mirror, which is widely used for the fabrication of commercially available Variable optical attenuators (VOAs_.

DESCRIPTION

[0002]A Variable Optical Attenuator (VOA) can be realized using Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) shutter devices which are also suitable for integration in the same hermetic package as an optical modulator. However, the addition of the output Tap monitor is either difficult to realize or requires a large volume incompatible with the hermetic package. Part of the volume increase comes from the addition of optical components along the collimated beam instead of the focused beam. Lens to fiber distance is maintained due to the required optical magnification and other optical performance criteria. Beam splitter and a shutter MEMS are added along the collimated beam as seen in the following FIG. 1.

[0003]Another alternative approach is to use an external fiber tap monitor assembly which is clearly larger, as illustrated in FIG. 2. Moreover, the MEMS shutter devices are vibration/shock sensitive/

[0004]Disadvantageously, conventional approaches are simply too large to be incorporated within other hermetic packages that carry a function such as optical modulator. Their use in recent and future CFP2 and smaller type of transceiver packages is also questionable due to size.

It is also thought that transceiver cost can be optimized if this function can be integrated with other functions as describe previously.
