Crowdsourcing the Detection of Triacetone Triperoxide ( Attacks

Triacetone triperoxide (TATP) is commonly used in homemade explosives, most recently in the Paris and Brussels bombings. It is easily prepared by the oxidation of acetone using common household chemicals. Disclosed is a method to crowdsource the detection of TATP to identify and track potential bomb threats.

    Disclosed is a method to crowdsource the detection of TATP and its precursors. The disclosed method would enable the detection and tracking of the source of TATP to allow authorities to preemptively intervene potential bomb threats. Recently a sensor was developed that is capable of detecting TATP through a CMOS MEMS device that has detection limits near 1ppm. This sensor could be easily incorporated into mobile electronics (see Figure 1 below).
