Abstract

This invention provides a method to resolve the problem that will happed when the LDAP(Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) consumer server recovers after a long downtime. This invention will adjust the push-based replication to do the replication work. In this method ,the consumer server will spend most effort in updating its entries in database according to the change file and the provider server will do little work. This will decrease the provider server's cost compared with push-based replication method. And when the consumer server completes the updates, the replication will switch back to push-based replication method and continue the coming updates.

An optimized replication adjustment method in push-based replication LDAP servers

LDAP(Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) replication uses the LDAP Content Synchronization protocol (or LDAP Sync for short) as the replica synchronization protocol. LDAP Sync provides a stateful replication which supports both pull-based and push-based synchronization and does not mandate the use of a history store. In pull-based replication the consumer periodically polls the provider for updates. In push-based replication the consumer listens to updates that are sent by the provider in realtime.

In push-based replication LDAP servers, if the consumer server is down for a long time, the provider server would have to save the change which will be pushed to consumer server in a file in order to push them to consumer server when it comes back. But as the size of the file continuously grows, it will cost the provider server more and more resources to maintain it which will decrease the provider server's performance. Because the provider server is the main server which provides service to clients, it will cause the whole LDAP server's service to slow down.

This invention provides a method to resolve the problem as below. When the consumer server recovers after a long downtime.
