Stress can affect people’s thinking levels and reactions when around others that make us stressed. This document describes a system to track interactions between people, while measuring their stress levels, and which then uses this to determine what individuals cause the stress levels of a person to rise, within a work environment.

Disclosed is an idea for a system which looks at the particular people a work employee interacts with during their work day, either face-to-face or through email or phone, and how their stress levels are affected. It does this by:

  · a wearable device that monitors when a person's stress levels rise · tracking to determine the location of employees at any given time · monitoring email and phone calls to track who is communicating with who at any given time
A stress correlation percentage is calculated for each employee in relation to other work colleagues. These indicators for all employees are then available to the employer or manager, so they can identify causes of stress for their employees, and re-shuffle teams or take other action if they so wish.

Background

    Research shows that our thinking levels and way we react is affected when we are around people that make us feel stressed.[1] This particular type of stress was defined as 'Encounter Stress' by K. Albrecht.[2]

    From an Employer's perspective, if there were certain individuals in their company who were continually causing the stress levels of others on their team to rise, they may like to be made aware of this. Not only are there the health detriments and possible sick days associated

with prolonged periods of stress for the affected employee, the fact that the employee's mind and the way that they think while around this person is affected would be having a negative impact on their work.

    From an individual employee's perspective, there is no way to identify if there are particular individuals that make an individual employee feel more stressed than at other times during the day so it can be hard to combat rising stress levels

    Research done by the HSE in the UK on stress in the workplace states that " Identifying the signs of stress at an early stage increases the possibility that action can be taken to deal with the symptoms and the underlying causes".[3] However, identifying the causes of the stress is difficult.

How the System Works:

Step 1:

    A rise in stress can be determined by changes in heart rate or respiratory rate. These measurements could come from a number of types of wearable devices, for example a Spire[4], which monitors respiratory rate or a FitBit[5], which monitors heart rate.

Step 2:

    The wearable device sends the readings to the app on the user's smartphone. The app can parse the user's stress levels and categorise the level on a percentage scale of 1 to 100, where 100% is when the user has the highest stress levels and 1% is where the user has the most relaxed (least stressed) levels. This parsing occurs at short time intervals, for example every 2 minutes, during standard working hours. This time interval could be configurable, however the shorter the interval the better the readings will be.
